“Neoga Veteran Answers Last Call -- William A. Smith Passes Away After Brief Illness”

William A. Smith died Friday at his home in Neoga after a brief illness. He was buried in the Long Point Cemetery, with Rev. R. H. Osborne preaching the funeral sermon. His body was draped in the old flag which he loved so well. He was a soldier in the Civil War, a member of the fifth Illinois cavalry, and served from 1861 to the close of the war.

The deceased was born in Whitley County, Kentucky, March 11, 1833. His father, Elijah Smith, who was a soldier of the revolution, moved to Jacksonville in 1836.
In 1853 William was married to Hannah Henson of Berlin, Ill. To this union was born four children. His first wife died in 1867.

In 1869 he was married to Fannie Burtner, and to this union were born three children. He leaves his wife and six children.
