Armstead was a son of Nathaniel Helm Floyd and his wife Lucy Wortham Floyd. He first married Elenora Dawson on March 12, 1826 in Gallatin County, Illinois. He later divorced Elenora in one of the first recorded divorces in Iowa County, Wisconsin (1837). He married Mary Ann Stipp Wigginton on February 4, 1841. He was one of Dodgeville's earliest prominent citizens. There was a Floyd School named for him as well as a Floyd Road.
