David was born on the family farm near Syracuse, New York. He left at the age of 22 and worked in the mercantile business. He married Helen Millicent Northrup June 24, 1859, in Phoenix, New York. They had moved to Palmyra, Marion, Missouri by 1860 where he was working in the patent medicine business. After three years, he moved his family to Mendon, Adams, Illinois, where he continued working as a peddler 3rd class. By 1880, the family had moved to Nebraska and settled on a farm one half mile south of Syracuse. By 1885, they moved to Friend and remained there. He fell December 4, 1890, and broke his back. Apparently there were complications from the fall that caused his demise at 2:55 a.m. at his home.
