EDNA - Joseph A. "Joe" Rhodes, 78, of Edna, Kan., died at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 25, 2005, at the Coffevyille Regional Medical Center. He had been in failing health and entered the hospital Monday evening.

He was born Oct. 6, 1926, to Benjamin Harrison and Ethel Naomi (Scott) Rhodes of rural Edna. He grew up and atended Trenton, Valeda and Edna Grade schools. He graduated from Labette County Community High School.

On Oct. 7, 1944, he married Ellen J. Elsworth at Labette City, Kan. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2004. She survives of the home.

Rhodes entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on Dec. 1, 1944, and served until Oct. 22, 1946. Following the service, he worked for the Kraft Cheese Plant in Oswego for a time, and then he worked as a machinist in Parsons. He worked for Kansas Gas and Electric as a lineman for several years later moving to Coffeyville and worked for Continental Can as a machinist. It later beccame Dixon and then Funk Manufacturing. He worked for U.S.D. 506 as a bus driver and did maintenance work. He worked for the Labette County Highway Department until retiring in the mid 1990s.

His life was centered around his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Edna and was a tribal member of the Cherokee Nation.

Those surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, John Rhodes, rural Coffeyville; Mark Rhodes and wife, Amy, rural Buffalo; Philip Rhodes and his wife Jennifer, Fort Scott; four daughters, Sue Sovereign and her husband David, Altadena, Calif.; Sandra Nash and her husband, Arthur, Altamont; Nancy Patton and her husband, Gary, Tulsa, Okla.; Naomi Smith and her husband Oral, rural Edna; 22 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Preceding in death were his parents; three brothers, Howard Rhodes, Hubert Rhodes and Jack Rhodes; two sisters, Glenna Podriznik and Ruth Livingston; one granddaughter, Lisa (Nash) Zook and one infant grandson, Randy Nash.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 30, at the First Baptist Church of Edna with Philip Rhodes, Eric Rucker, and Mike Tull officiating. Burial followed in the North Edna Cemetery at Edna.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Edna and may be left or mailed to the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, Box 325, Altamont, 67330.
