Arkansas Governor, Author. McMath served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, achieving the rank of Major General by the time he retired. He served as Governor of Arkansas from 1949 to 1953. In 2003 he released his book, "Promises Kept," which chronicled his war years when he served in the South Pacific and also his political career. General McMath had six children: Sandy, Phillip, Bruce, Melissa, Patricia and Celeste. All but Celeste, who died at birth in 1955, survived him.
