Anna worked as a linotype operator for a newspaper in her hometown of Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, and was active in her church's youth groups. After the death of her grandfather in 1901 she moved with her parents to St Louis, Missouri. She married John Milton Hartline in June 1904. In early 1915, she and John, whose health was failing, and their two sons, Calvin and Russell, moved to a farm they owned in Eaton Rapids, Michigan.

Anna's sister Cora Stillwagner married John's half-3rd cousin, William Henry Hartline.
