Teresa Agnes Donnelly Hardie, 104, who planted trees with Kate Sessions more than 50 years ago and who, repeatedly, had been honored for volunteer work in church and community until she was more than 102, died Wednesday in the Grossmont District Hospital.
She lived in her home on El Cerrito Drive in East San Diego until a few days before her death. She had lived there since she and her husband, the late Ralph C. Hardie, an educator, attorney and real estate broker, moved to San Diego from Oklahoma in 1935. He died in 1953.
She believed in volunteerism, brought her son and daughter and grandchildren up to be volunteers, recruited volunteers in the community and received many awards for her efforts. She was known for her ability to recruit, "especially after she passed her 100th birthday and still was working in volunteer jobs like clerking at the Mercy Hospital gift shop," her daughter, Mary-Em Howard, said.
She tutored students who needed help, and she worked with many who were illiterate, teaching them to read.
She had a boundless sense of humor and enjoyed being with young people. "I think I was getting too old for her," Mrs. Howard said. Yet she took life seriously. "We are put here for a purpose," Mrs Hardie said in an interview with The San Diego Union on her 100th birthday. To live well and happily, she said, "live up to your ideals."
The neighbors gave the first block party for Mrs. Hardie when she was 98. The custom continued annually, each Oct. 28, until Teresa Hardie's birthday became a neighborhood celebration. By the time she was 100, former residents of the area were joining the party. They brought food for a potluck meal. Chairs for spectators were set up along the street. There were drill teams, bands and dance groups performing in the street. Until this year, she joined the performers. She received congratulations from politicians, from President Reagan down to local officeholders, many of whom, like Rep. Jim Bates, made a point of attending in person.
She appeared on Hollywood Squares and was a $10,000 winner on the television Family Feud quiz show. She was 5 feet tall and, at her heaviest, weighed 87 pounds. She was "an absolute fashion plate right to the end of her life," a neighbor said. "She truly looked like a doll," another said.
Born Oct. 28, 1884, in Chillicothe, Mo., she studied at the University of Oklahoma and for a time taught in the home of Holmes Tuttle, (who became an informal adviser to President Reagan,) in Tuttle, Okla. She was a student under Ralph C. Hardie, and the couple were married in 1916. After they settled in San Diego, he was a staff member of the San Diego Army-Navy Academy in Pacific Beach. The school later became Brown Military School and moved to Carlsbad. On arriving in San Diego, Mrs. Hardie became involved in the community. She met Grace Klauber, her contemporary, who will be 104 this month. Mrs. Hardie helped Kate Sessions plant trees on the Pacific Beach Elementary School grounds.
She was a founding member of the Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church and a founder and past president of the Blessed Sacrament Women's Club.
She is survived by her daughter and son, Mary-Em Howard of La Mesa and John Donnelly Hardie of Arizona; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Monday in the Blessed Sacrament church. Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Entombment will be in the Holy Cross Mausoleum where her husband was entombed.
