Ira D. "Doug" Carey, 76, of Massillon, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011 in the emergency department of Affinity Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Ironton on Feb. 1, 1935 to the late Clyde and Eltha (Elkins) Carey and was a US Navy veteran. He had previously worked at the Timken Company, Republic Steel and Massillon Steel Castings.
He is survived by children, Michael Carey of Antioch, Calif., Tim (Janet) Carey of Beach City, Jeff Carey and Arnie Carey, both of Massillon; his former wife, Nell Carey of Massillon; five grandchildren; sisters, Wanda (Paul) Perkins of South Point, Shelby (Ron) Malone of Boaz, Ala., Mollianne Dillon of Atlanta, Ga. and Belinda (Donnie) Massey of Palm Harbor, Fla. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Michael, Alston, Fred and Jerry.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Spidell Funeral Home, 209 Chestnut St., NW, Brewster. Family graveside services will be held at a later date at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman. A Memorial Website has been created by the funeral home and may be accessed at www.spidellfuneralhome.com where you may share a memory or sign the guestbook. The family would like to thank the staff of Altercare of Navarre for their kind and loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any Hospice or Veterans organizations.
