Josephine, a teacher, was clerking in her father's coal company's office when she met Calvin Effinger Hartline who worked in a shop across the street. They married in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in April 1932 and had two children, John ("Jack") and Marlene. Her husband's career advancement ultimately took the family to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1947. Widowed there in Apr 1966, Josephine moved to southern California, where she married widower Erwald Carl "Wally" Pape in Riverside in May 1970. Her ashes were scattered in her hometown of Mystic, Iowa, where she had often returned to visit family and friends.
