U.S. Senator. He graduated from the law department of the University of Wisconsin, son in 1873, was admitted to the bar in 1874 and proceeded to practice law in Hudson, Wisconsin. He was prosecuting attorney of St. Croix County, (1878-80). Moving to Minnesota, in 1881, he continued the practice of law and was Attorney General of Minnesota, (1887-93). In 1901, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Cushman K. Davis, serving until 1907. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he practiced law in Washington, D.C. and was vice president and general counsel of the North American Development Corporation from 1923 until his death at age 77.
