Hon. Wendall Davis was the son of Thomas
and Mercy (Hedge) Davis; born February
13, 1776; graduated at Harvard College,
1796; admitted to the bar 1799, and settled
in Sandwich, where he married Caroline
Williams, daughter of Dr. Thomas Smith, and
had George Thomas, 1810, graduate of
Harvard College, 1829, who settled in
Greenfield, Mass., in the practice of law,
1832, and was a member of the
Massachusetts Senate 1840 and 1841, member
of Congress 1851-53; Wendall Thornton,
1818, Harvard College, 1838, admitted to
the bar 1841, and several times member
of the General Court from Greenfield. The
father was clerk of the Massachusetts
Senate; afterwards Senator, also
Representative, from the town of
Sandwich and several years Sheriff of
Barnstable County.
