Ferdinand Baker was born July 6, 1866, at St. Johnsbury, Vermont, the son of David Baker (19 Aug 1830-15 Mar 1908) and Emily Howard Cutler Baker (23 Apr 1835-15 Jul 1932). He was baptized in the Family Church, West Glover, VT in 1868.

Ferdinand came from a large family as he had 11 brothers and sisters, two of whom died as infants. The nine remaining siblings were: Alida 25 Jul 1856-5 Nov 1943 (Burleigh Folsom Spalding 3 Dec 1853-17 Mar 1934), Carrie Sarah 2 Nov 1857-14 Mar 1862, Cora E. 1 Feb 1859-19 Sep 1920 (Newton Adelbert Lewis 4 Apr 1855-28 May 1944), Edward Dickinson 27 Sep 1860-27 Nov 1949 (Samantha "Elizabeth" Gillespie 13 Jun 1872-8 Apr 1953), Henry Arthur 20 Jun 1864-22 Oct 1866, Ernest Cutler 24 Aug 1858-21 Aug 1917 (Myra G. Jameson 1868-1898 and Nettie M. Bean 20 May 1876-13 Oct 1962), Emily Blanchard 16 Jan 1870-13 Dec 1944 (Rev. Levi Wild 29 Jun 1859-26 May 1946), Charles Hardy 28 Apr 1874-8 Oct 1933 (Fannie L. Burdick May 1876 – unknown) and Howard Mason 4 Sep 1880-13 Apr 1918 (Lula May Lewis 17 May 1887-5 Jan 1951).

He spent his youth in Vermont and moved west in the 1880's to Fargo, ND and Duluth, MN. He spent over 30 years farming in the Perley, MN area before retiring in 1926.

On June 29, 1889, Ferdinand married Carrie Johnson (Gaare) at Fargo, ND. Carrie was born 9 Oct 1863 at Haltdalen,Sør Trondelag, Norway to parents, Ole Johnson Gaare (26 Aug 1819-9 Nov 1904) and Sigri Pettersen Gjelseth Ness Gaare (9 Mar 1834-3 Feb 1920).

After their marriage in 1889, Ferd and Carrie moved to Duluth, MN for a few years before returning to Vermont about 1894. In 1895 they moved to the Perley, MN area. They settled on a farm that was 5 miles east and two and one-half miles south of Perley, MN in Viding Township of Clay County. They farmed there a few years before moving to Lee Township.

Ferdinand and Carrie were the parents of four children: Emily Othelia 29 Nov 1889-7 Jan 1973 (Gilbert Crosby 19 Aug 1891-10 Aug 1943), Sadie Mae 19 Sep 1891-20 Jan 1980 (Bernt Cornelius Olson 27 Sep 1885-12 Jan 1978), Henry Edward 9 Oct 1894-4 Jan 1913 and Edna Amanda 4 Jul 1900-26 Oct 1995 (Chester Arthur Dosland 2 Dec 1898-18 May 1988). The Gilbert Crosbys homesteaded in Montana. The Bernt Olsons moved to Vancouver, WA and the Chester Doslands lived in the Perley/Hendrum area.

Ferdinand and Carrie moved to Fargo, ND in October 1943 and began living at Bethany Homes. Ferdinand passed away at Fargo, Cass County, ND 22 May 1944 at the age of 77. Funeral services for him were held at the Bethania Lutheran Church, rural Perley, MN on May 26, 1944. Pastor Thomas Anderson officiated at the services. Pallbearers were: G.E. Ericksen, Harold Hult, Ben Millang, Peter Danielson, L. R. Stennes and E. S. Houglum. He was known for his friendliness and neighborliness as well as his civic pride.

Carrie continued living in Fargo and passed away 30 Dec 1946 at the age of 83. Funeral services for her were held at the Bethania Lutheran Church, rural Perley, where their family had attended services for many years on January 4, 1947. Rev. Thomas Anderson officiated at her service. Pallbearers were Ben Millang, Peter Danielson, Lars Stennes, Thormon Dosland, Ralph Woodcock and Arthur Christenson. Carrie was held in high regard and respected by her friends as a loving mother and faithful and active church member.
