"Jean Reinecke, wife of former California Lt. Governor Ed Reinecke and a long-time resident of Placerville, died peacefully in Rancho Mirage, Calif., on Oct. 25, 2011. She was 88 years old. She was born April 22, 1923.

Jean and Ed Reinecke owned the Diamond R Ranch on Bucks Bar Road for several decades, where they were the first ranchers to import and breed Charolais cattle in El Dorado County. In 1981, the Reineckes opened "Zachary Jacques" a very successful destination restaurant known for fine prime rib and great live music. In addition, they ran Reinecke Realty Residential Brokerage.

Jean was vivacious and gracious. Patrons of "ZJ's" will remember her as she greeted all at the door with a smile. The Reinecke's huge Fall Barbeque at the "Diamond R" was an annual highlite and enjoyed by friends from near and far.

Jean is survived by her husband Ed Reinecke, four children, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren."

"Rancho Mirage — Jean Reinecke, who served as California's second lady in the early 1970s, passed away Tuesday.

The 88-year-old wife of former Lt. Gov. Ed Reinecke died shortly before 6 p.m. at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, according to her daughter Judy Harger.

Reinecke had been ill for some time and was in the hospital for emergency surgery.

She is survived by her husband, Ed; four children; 11 grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.

As a young model with bright red hair and an equally memorable smile, Jean Reinecke moved from Pennsylvania to California in the 1950s to star in the movies.

She found some success and married.

After her first husband died, she met then-Congressman Ed Reinecke at a campaign fundraiser.

They quickly fell in love and she supported him as he served as lieutenant governor from 1969-74 under then-Gov. Ronald Reagan.

Harger said that as the state's second lady, her mother championed causes that helped children, especially those with developmental disabilities.

"She was extremely dynamic and was always interested in doing for other people, whether in small ways or large ways," Harger said.

The Reineckes have lived in the desert for about 20 years, most recently making their home in Rancho Mirage.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Theresa's in Palm Springs.

Jean Reinecke will be laid to rest at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City."
