Vera was the second of three daughters of Frank Lewis Weeks (1877-1965) and Beatrice Louisa Welch (1882-1924). They emigrated from England to Canada in May 1911.
Vera married her first husband, Murray James Dobson, in 1937. Both were teachers. Vera was a founding member of the original women's teachers' federation. Murray passed away in 1977.
Russell Herbert (Bert) Gould, the father of pianist Glenn Gould, married Vera on 19 Jan 1980. Glenn, his only child, declined to be his best man and did not attend the ceremony.
When Glenn's stroke occurred and he was hospitalized with a coma, Bert realized there was no hope, but he didn't want Glenn to be taken off life support on his wife's birthday. They waited until the next day (4 October 1982).
