Blaine W. Hatch, Retired Circuit Court Judge, Died Friday Night
-Judge Blaine W. Hatch, 71, of 317 N. Mulberry, retired judge of the 37th Judicial Circuit, is dead. Death claimed the widely known and loved jurist at 10:55 p.m. Friday in Oaklawn hospital where he had been a patient since Wednesday evening, Nov. 2.
-The outstanding judicial career of Circuit Judge Hatch came to an end on Dec. 31, 1959. He had served as circuit judge for 32 years and in his earlier years had served as a probate judge.
-In his earlier years he also had served as a supervisor and as a city attorney for Marshall for one year.
-Since his retirement from the bench he was a member of the Hatch-Hatch and Wagner law firm of Battle Creek.
-Judge Hatch is survived by his wife, the former Mabel Borradaile, of Marshall, whom he married on Oct. 27, 1915; one daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Audra) Nickerson, of Battle Creek; one son, Gerald B. Hatch, Battle Creek; one grand daughter Deborah Nickerson; two sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Evans and Mrs. Hortense McKenzie, of Marshall; one brother, Hazen J. Hatch, of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews.
-He was born in Marshall on July 26, 1889 and spent his entire life here. He graduated from Marshall high school in 1908 and from the University of Michigan law school in 1911. He practiced law with his father, the late Jesse M. Hatch, for nine years from 1911 to 1920.
-One of Calhoun county's best known citizens, Judge Hatch was a member of the Trinity Episcopal church and had been a member of the church vestry.
-Active in Masonary, he was a member of St. Alban's lodge, No. 20, F. and A.M., and past master of the lodge and also was a life member of Marshall Commandery, No. 17, Knights Templars. He also was a past commander of the Commandery.
-He also had been a member of the Sons of Union Veterans, the Knights of Pythias and the Wilder Creek Rearing Pond Association.
-Friends recalled that his first appointment to the judgeship was made Oct. 27, 1927 by the late Gov. Fred W. Green.
-Throughout the years, because of the fair and impartial manner in which he conducted the court procedures, his unbiased opinions and findings, and the many courtesies shown by him to both the practicing attorneys, their clients and the jurors, he was continuously and unanimously endorsed for the position by both the Republican and Democrat members of the Calhoun County Bar Associations.
-Hunting, fishing and gardening were three of his hobbies.
-The judge was part of a long tradition that had seven lawyers of the Hatch family working both in Marshall and Battle Creek for the past 80 years. Marshall has another Hatch firm, that Hazen J. and Hazen VandenBerg Hatch, and Lenton Sculthorp.
-The judge's father, Jesse M., was the first Hatch to become a lawyer and his four sons followed his vocation.
