He was born May 24, 1943, at Glendale, Calif., to Woodrow Wilson and Rachel Irene Quinn Longhurst. He was raised and attended schools in the Pocatello area, and served a mission for the LDS Church in Peru. He continued his education at Ricks College and Brigham Young University and received his doctorate from the University of California at San Francisco.
On July 16, 1965, he married Sharon Goff in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. After his graduation from UCSF, they lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, for several years while he served in the Air Force Dental Corps. After setting up practice in Arco, he continued his studies, which included earning the prestigious fellowship award for extended dental training in Philadelphia at the Academy of General Dentistry in 1986. For 20 years, he had practiced dentistry in Arco. His wife died in August 1993.
An active member of the LDS Church, he served in the bishopric, as high priest quorum president, and on the stake high council. He also served as president of the Rotary Club in Arco. He was a goal achiever. His hobbies included spending time outdoors, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his children, Mrs. Darrin (Colissa) Teeter of Boise, Sheldon Longhurst of Salt Lake City, Mrs. Kevin (Lupi) Miller and JoLana Longhurst, both of Pocatello, Norman Longhurst, serving an LDS mission in Florida, and Kevin Longhurst, Valina Longhurst and Joshua Longhurst, all of Arco; his father and stepmother, Woodrow and April Longhurst of Pocatello; three brothers and five sisters, Devon W. Longhurst of West Jordan, Utah, Glen Longhurst of Aspen, Colo., Dave Longhurst of Orem, Utah, Mrs. Earl (Karen) Mechan of Acworth, Ga., Mrs. Ken (Connie) Mason of Tacoma, Wash., Mrs. Paul (Sandra) Perry of Preston, and Mrs. George (Loalynn) Crockett of Salt Lake City; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Arco LDS Ward with Bishop David L. Caldwell officiating. Friends and family will meet Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Marvel Memorial Chapel in Arco and Saturday for one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Mount McCaleb Cemetery in Mackay.
