PHARR ??? Glen Rodney Robie, age 84, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2005, at Columbia Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen. He was born to Willa and Rodney E. Robie on October 1, 1920, in Springtown, Texas.
He served in World War II as a U.S. Navy SeaBee. In 1958, he managed the American Legion State Finalist Baseball Team. In 1961, he served as commander of the American Legion, Post No. 101 of Pharr. Glen was manager and coach of the 1962 World Champion Hidalgo County Colt League All-Star Team. In 1965, he served as president of the PSJA Quarterback Club. He was a member of the Pharr Rotary Club with 40 years of perfect attendance. In 1973, he served as president of the Pharr Rotary Club and received two ???Paul Harris Fellows??? honors in 1984 and 1993. From 1981 through 2002, he managed/coached the Pharr Rotary Club Slow-Pitch Softball Team. In 1987, the City of Pharr dedicated the new Pony League Baseball Field in his honor. In 1988, the City of Pharr named him ???Citizen of the Year??? and in 1993, he was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Maysie Marie Robie of Pharr; two sons, R.C. Robie (Olivia) of Pharr and Robert L. Robie (Phyllis) of Jacksonville, Fla.; one daughter, Glenda L. Berthold (John) of San Antonio; six grandchildren, T.J. Robie, Julie Robie, Michelle Anderson, Lori Waugh, Keith Berthold and Brian Berthold; and nine great-grandchildren, Andrew and Caitlin Anderson, Samantha and Brittany Waugh, Joshua Robie Adame, Ashton, Aiden, and Brett Berthold and Gracie Neely.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Skinner Silva Funeral Chapel on West Sam Houston in Pharr. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, ,at Skinner-Silva Funeral Chapel in Pharr, with the Rev. Mike Flanagan officiating. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery on North Taylor Road in McAllen. Graveside military honors will be under the direction of American Legion, Post No. 101 of Pharr.
Pallbearers will be Jerry King, Joe Brown, Wayne Wesphal, Kent Shepard, Mickey Smith, and Randy Hausenfluck. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kenneth Walters, Henry Derr, Tony Villegas, Tommy Reichert, Toby Shuttlesworth, John Osborne, Baker Osborne and Bill Martin.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to ones favorite charity.
Glen will be remembered for his many lifelong accomplishments and will be missed by many.
