William served as a private in Company F, 54th Georgia Infantry during the Civil War. After the war, he signed his oath of loyalty to the Union on July 11, 1867, in Chatham Co., Georgia.
William died of a brain hemorrhage when he was about 45 years old.

William was buried in this lot along with Dennis Blankenship, John R. Hassett, Joseph P. Hassett, Mary B. Hassett, and Mary Welch (but she has since been re-interred elsewhere).
