U.S. Congressman. Educated by a private tutor, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1831 and practiced law in Jackson, Georgia. During the Seminole and Creek Wars, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1835, 47) and a member of the Georgia State Senate, (1838, 49-50). In 1851, he was elected as a State Rights candidate to the Thirty-second Congress and as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress, serving until 1855. After his term, he served as a member of the Georgia State Senate, (1855-56) and practiced law. With the secession of Georgia, from the Union in 1861, he served as a Colonel in command of the 30th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Confederate Army during the Civil War.
