NORTHFIELD, MN. PIONEER FAMILY Daniel E. Bowe came from Ashtabula, Ohio, by train and boat to Hastings, and walked to Northfield, taking up a claim in 1854. He built a log cabin and his wife, Lucy Lord Bowe (daughter of Similius Lord), and four children joined him in 1855. Daniel drew up papers dividing Waterford Township from Sciota Township, named from a river in his Ohio home. Son William A. Bowe was a Civil War veteran and originated self-supporting stairways, then used in the State Capitol. Daughter Esther Bowe taught near Wanamingo for $1.25 a week and "boarded round." Son Arthur Bowe was a lawyer. Son Elbert D. Bowe took up the claim in Sciota Township, preempted by Similius Lord.

Died at his home, one mile south of town, Thursday, Sept. 1, evening last. Mr. Bowe was born in Genesee County, New York. When forty years of age he removed to this state and commenced the practice of law in Northfield in 1862, and continued in the law business until a few years ago, when his failing health compelled him to retire from active life. The funeral services were held at the residence Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Husband of Lucy Eveline Lord Bowe.
