He completed high school in Greenville, SC, and was a 1960 chemistry graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, where he was a member of the Reserve Officer's Training Corps. (ROTC). He was comissioned a 2LT upon his graduation, and then completed seven years of active duty, including a tour in Germany with the 4th Armored Division Artillery and a tour in Vietnam. Among his military awards and decorations were the Army Commendation Medal; Bronze Star Medal; and Army Air Medal. Following active duty, he remained in the Army Reserve and retired from the US Army after twenty years of service as a Lieutenant Colonel (LTC). He earned a Doctor of Chemistry at Clemson University in 1974.
He was survived by his wife of 42 years; and a son.
Interment on August 16, 2011.
