Grandma was the wife of James Herschel Hammond. She was the mother of 7 children 3 boys and 4 girls. She had lived her life with and enlarged heart and it was on the right side of her body. She was a wonderful lady who went to church every sunday no matter what kind of weather there was.

I remember one time when I was little we were visiting Grandma. The cemetery that family members are buried in could be seen from Grandma's kitchen window. Grandma saw some boys knocking over headstones. She went outside and cut a switch and went after those boys. She caught them and give them a whipping. She then walked them home and told their mom that she had whipped them. She made them tell their mom what they had done. They had to go back and help reset the stones they had tipped over. After they were done their mom whipped their bottoms all the way home.

My dad always told us that until he was older he thought his name was "wood and ashes" He said grandma would look at him and say "wood and ashes" he said out the door he would go to get the wood and back in the house to clean the ashes from the fireplace.

On her 86th birthday she decided to climb on her roof to patch a leak. She pulled her dress up between her legs and tucked it in her belt and she fixed that leak. Grandma was an amazing woman. She was just barely 5 foot tall, but she could be a spitfire. She was so admired and loved by all who knew her.
Grandma we all miss you and love you dearly. Rest in peace.
