PETERSBURG - George Baker Moomau, 83, of Petersburg, W.Va., died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born Aug. 26, 1920, in Petersburg, he was the son of the late William C. Moomau and Sara Taylor Moomau.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Coffman, Mary Newlon Clark and Anne K. Thomas; three brothers, William T. Moomau, Lewis C. Moomau and Dr. Frederick Moomau.

Mr. Moomau was a graduate of Petersburg High School in 1939 and Strayer Business College in Baltimore, Md. He was a lieutenant (j.g.) in the US Navy Air Corps serving as a B-24 Liberator pilot during World War II. He was with the Fleet Air Wing 7, VP112 and was stationed in North Africa and England. While in England he flew missions on long range anti-submarine patrols.

Mr. Moomau was a former CEO and president of the Grant County Bank and chairman of the board of Highlands Bankshares, an FDIC examiner, member of the West Virginia State Banking Board, member of the Advisory Board for the American Bankers Association, member of the Petersburg Industrial Development Corp., past president and treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Petersburg, the 2001 recipient of the Kiwanis Hixson Fellowship Award, deacon of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church, member of the Advisory Board of the Potomac Council of Boy Scouts, member of American Legion Post No. 78, and VFW Post 6454 and member of the Grant County Pilot's Association.

Surviving: his wife of 52 years, Lura Beckner "Becky" Moomau; two sons, Dr. G. Ben Moomau and wife, Joni, of Winchester, Va., Fred B. Moomau of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren, Thomas, Lura Lee, and Sarah Moomau of Winchester, Va., one sister, Sally Moomau King of Warsaw, Va.; one brother, Henry Moomau of Oakland, Md.; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard Cardot officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Moomau Library, Petersburg, W.Va., or the Petersburg Presbyterian Church or the First Presbyterian Church, Winchester, Va., or charity of choice.
