He was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Warsaw to the late Thomas C. and Kathryn Rickel Judd. He married Patricia Guthrie, on April 15, 1945, in Denver. She died in 1991. He married Jacqueline "Jackie" Groninger in Goshen, on Nov. 27, 1992. She survives.
Also surviving are two children, Sara (Bruce) Qualey of Cable, Wis., and Dr. Samuel (Maggie) Judd of Goshen; three grandchildren, Audrey Causa and Thomas and Joseph Judd; four great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Debra Rich and Shelly Lewis, both of Warsaw, and Peggy Groninger of Monticello; five stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren. And also a step sister Peggy Callander-Collins
Gus was raised in Akron and graduated from Akron High School. He attended Indiana University before enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served as a weatherman in the Army Air Corps. While stationed in Colorado, he met his first wife, Patricia. His military service ended in 1946 on the South Pacific island of Guam. After the war, Gus went back to school and graduated in 1949 from the Butler School of Pharmacy, Indianapolis.
After graduation he went to work with his uncle, Chic Judd, in Elkhart, at the original Judd Drug Store. In 1956, he moved to Goshen to open and manage Judd Drugs. He later became president of the company. Gus loved the drug store business, whether filling prescriptions, meeting and greeting customers or running his lunch counter and soda fountain. He retired in 1979 and moved to Rochester, Minn. After Patricia died, he moved back to Goshen and married Jackie.
While in Goshen, he served on the first board of directors of Goshen Hospital and was on the original board at Greencroft. He also served on the Home Federal Saving and Loan board of directors.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Goshen. His hobbies included gardening, fishing and playing the cornet.
Gus' wishes were to be cremated. Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A private memorial service will be held prior to the visitation. Burial of his cremains will be in Nichols Cemetery, Akron.
