US Senator. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was the publisher and editor of the "Grand Rapids Herald" fro 1906 to 1928. in March 1928 he was appointed as a Republican Senator from Michigan to the United States Senate, filling the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Woodbridge N. Ferris. Elected outright for the seat in November 1928, he would go on to serve the next twenty-three years in the Senate. He would serve in a number of power posts while a Senator, including as Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations, and as President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1947 to 1949. He died in office in April 1951.
