In December 1941, when Hugh was 17, the U. S. entered World War II. So, upon his high-school graduation, Hugh enlisted in the U. S. Navy, serving as a Marine on the USS Nevada. He was promoted to the rank of corporal.
At the end of World War II, Hugh returned home to Haskell County and married. The couple had two sons and a daughter. Their daughter Linda Sue Watson died when she was a few days old in 1947.
As his sons grew up, Hugh served as a scoutmaster for Troup #357 and also worked with the scouts through the First Presbyterian Church.
Hugh was a member of the First Baptist Church.
In 1957 he moved to Arlington, Texas, and worked as a machinist foreman for Menasco Aerospace of Euless, Texas, for 20 years, retiring in 1980. He was also in the trucking business with one of his sons.
He was a member of the Breckenridge Elks Lodge #1480 and Rambling Sam's Camping Club.
Hugh died at the age of 50 on February 13, 1974, in Arlington, Texas. His father Hugh had also died at the age of 50 in Haskell County, Texas.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents Hugh Watson (1894-1945) and Erma Crow Watson (1896-1979), his brother Thomas "Tom" Wells Watson (1923-1990), and his sister Christyne Watson Wilson (1915-1947). Many members of his family were buried in the Willow Cemetery in Haskell County.
Hugh was survived by his wife, his two sons, and his sister Mildred Watson Blakely (1917-2010). He was also survived by four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
