Richard 'Dick' Reid Pitman Sr., 93Richard “Dick” Reid Pitman Sr., 93, passed away Monday, Nov. 10, 2014, at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey. The service was 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Epsilon United Methodist Church.Dick was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Rapid City, Mich., the son of Adam and Minnie (Hatch) Pitman. He graduated from school in Rapid City and worked as an automobile mechanic in Ohio.During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy in England as an aviation machinist’s mate second class. It was there he met and married the love of his life, Edith Annie “Molly” Deem, on Nov. 25, 1944. They made their home in Petoskey where he owned Dick’s Body Shop and later managed other auto body garages.Dick was an avid sportsman who loved spending time hunting and fishing with family and friends. He faithfully served the Lord in many roles as a member of Epsilon United Methodist Church and was a past member of Odd Fellows Lodge, Springvale Township Board and was instrumental in the formation of the Springvale Township Volunteer Fire Department. In retirement, Dick served others and shared his faith while volunteering at the Nehemiah House.He was preceded in death by his wife, Molly, in 1987; son, Richard Jr. “Ric,” in 2009; and siblings, Paul, Roscoe, Heber, Kenneth, Helen, Gertrude and Ruth Alma.He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Linda; grandsons, Charlton (Christina) of Conway, Robert (Shannon) of Howell, Kyle (Jennifer) of Alanson; and great-grandchildren, Roman and Katoni Rickley of Conway, Logan Pitman of Howell, and Abigail, Ashley and Amy Pitman of Alanson; and many nephews and nieces.The family suggests donations to Epsilon United Methodist Church.Arrangements were handled by Charles G. Parks Funeral Home in Petoskey.
