Katherine Leona Adkins, 91, formerly of Delphos and Holton, died Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Presbyterian Manor in Topeka.

She was born August 24, 1920 on a farm near Delphos, the daughter of Linus and Anna Sutherlund Gustafson. She graduated Valedictorian of her class at Delphos High School in 1937, and was a graduate of the Brown Mackie Business College in Salina.

Leona worked for Kansas Power and Light at Belleville, then Salina, before she joined the U.S. Army during World War II as part of the WAC. She earned the rank of Sergeant and was stationed at various places including England and France. She later worked at Ft. Riley and then at the Delphos Post Office. In 1983 she retired and moved to Holton.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Holton, Presbyterian Women, the Auxiliary to Post No. 7697 of the V.F.W. at Glasco, the Progressive Study Club, and A.A.R.P.

Leona married Ralph Otis Adkins on December 2, 1946 at Lawrence. He died in March of 1981.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gary J. Adkins, and a sister, Ester Berkley.

Survivors include four sons, David L. Adkins, Holton, Dan O. Adkins and wife Judy, Colorado Springs, Donald K. Adkins and wife Remy, Newton, and Max Adkins and wife Susan, Minneapolis, KS; one daughter, Barbara Ann Davis and husband Joe, Shawnee; thirteen grandchildren, and seventeen great grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 10th, at the Delphos Cemetery.
