He was appointed a surgeon's mate in the Navy on January 1,1800 and he lived to be the oldest officer in service. A review of his life is not without interest to the medical officer of today for earliy in his career he took part in the war with Tripoli, was taken prisoner on the occasion of the loss of the U.S. frigate Philadelphia, and held cative by the Tripolians for over a year and a half, during which time he kept a journal which throws much light on a historical event almost forgotten.

Affectionate in his nature, faithful in the performance of his duty, and pure in spirit, He has left, as a patriotic christian, a character
without stain, and an example worthy of emulation.
He was upwards of fifty-two years in the service of his Country, and at the time of his death held the oldest commission in the Navy."
