Mrs. Melissa A. Burton died last evening at 9 o'clock, at the residence of her husband, J. T. Burton, on Mechanics street, at the age of 29 years. Her passing away furnished an exhibition of Christian faith that was beautiful to contemplate. She remained conscious until the very last moment, and the sweet smile which illumined her face, even after death had set upon her features the majesty of his awful seal, gave to her weeping friends the precious assurance that the glories of an eternal state had already burst upon her prophetic vision. The decline of the deceased covered a period of two years, and the insidious encroachments of the disease which enfeebled the body of the sufferer only seemed to strengthen her trust in the wisdom of Him to whom she had committed her soul, and to exalt the graces of her character. With her, love cast out all fear, and the days of her affliction were accomplished she went with joy to the rich rewards of which she enjoyed a foretaste, even while traveling through the valley of the shadow.

Mrs. Burton was the daughter of George and Mary E. Hume. She was born in Rush county, Indiana, July, 1855. She was married to Mr. Burton in 1874, and came to Emporia in 1890 (sic). This union was blessed with one child--a son--who is left to comfort the mourning husband and to share his sorrow. Her father and one sister also survive her. The deceased was an earnest and consistent member of the Christian church, with which she maintained an active communication until prevented by disease from attending the means of grace.

She rendered to her family all of the devotion which her loving and loyal nature was capable, and in her intercourse with the world she demonstrated that she had been with Christ and learned of Him.

The remains were taken to Indianapolis to-day for burial and were accompanied by the bereaved son and husband.
