The son of John & Susan (Brady) Manning, in 1860 he was a farmer presumably living in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, July 28, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a private with Co. C, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded at Fredericksburg December 13, 1862, he nonetheless honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 24, 1864, as a private with Co. C, 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry (80th Pa), and on July 15, 1865, was honorably discharged by general order to date July 12, 1865.
NOTE: A James Manning of the same age enlisted and mustered in Harrisburg on the same date as this James' enlistment and muster with the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The "other" James mustered with Co. L, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa) but deserted on a date not reported. Whether these two men were in fact one is unknown, but the coincidence is striking, and actions such as implied here were not unprecedented.

He died along the railroad near Harrisburg's Wildwood Park from a "fractured skull by falling a distance of 18 feet, striking head on stone - accidental." His remains were not identified for four days until his daughter read a newspaper account of the event and suspected it might be her father. She identified his remains.
