Helen Neola Monroe was born in Neodesha, Kansas, January 12, 1897, the daughter of James Hugh & Mary Jane Stansbury Monroe. She lived her entire life in Neodesha as did her only sibling, sister Lee, (Ocean Lee Monroe).

Her father James Hugh Monroe, born September 4, 1861 in Palestine, Illinois, passed away at the age of 50 on February 12 ,1912 in Neodesha. He is buried in the Neodesha Cemetery. His widow, Mary Jane Monroe, eventually moved to town into the residence on Wisconsin Street in Neodesha where she ran Monroe Rooms, boarding and feeding the workers she rented rooms to. Helen lived with her while she raised her daughter Shirley. Mary died May 26, 1952 in Neodesha and is buried next to her husband, Hugh, in the Monroe plot of the Neodesha Cemetery. Mary Jane Stansbury was born November 10, 1867 in Iowa, and came to Neodesha as a child with her parents in a covered wagon, a trip that took six months according to her account.

Helen attended Neodesha High School and shortly after, married her high school sweetheart, Esley Ernest Elkins. To this union their only son and my father, Esley E. Elkins, Jr. was born on May 23, 1918. (Dad was known as Junior Elkins around town, but because his mother married Mr. Patchin soon afterwards, he was also called Junior Patchin.) Esley Sr. trained in New York in 1915 as an Electrical Engineer, but fell on hard times at the beginning of World War I. Helen and Esley were divorced in November of 1919, but he had already departed to work in Oregon until something opened up back home. Esley Ernest Elkins, Sr., born in Atlanta, Kansas August 28, 1891, passed away January 14, 1923 in Littleton, Colorado from Tuberculosis he contracted during his stint in the Army. He is buried along with his parents, William W. & Luella Schooling Elkins, in the Abbey Mausoleum, Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, Kansas.

Shortly after Helen divorced Mr. Elkins, she married Royal Johnson Patchin in 1919. Together they raised Esley and had four children of their own: Roberta, an infant that died in 1920, Rosemary born Dec 2, 1921, Robert Monroe "Bobby" Patchin born January 30, 1923, and daughter Shirley Dorene born in January of 1940 who was born shortly after the death of her father. Royal, son of A.D. & Nora Johnson Patchin, passed away at the age of 38 on November 28, 1939 while Helen was seven months pregnant.

Son Esley Elkins, Jr. married Christina Bird in 1939 and their son Jerry Leroy Elkins was born to them. Esley then married Ocie Lee Ellen Usher on January 9 1943 in Nowata, Oklahoma, and they had three children: Kerry Lee, 1945, Esley E. (Nick) Elkins III, 1948, and son Ricky Ray, 1955. He passed away suddenly on September 4, 1966 of a heart attack. Ocie remarried in 1968 to Ralph Leonard Gentry. He died in January of 1998 and Ocie Lee passed away in Neodesha June 14, 2005.

Daughter Rosemary married Dennis Edward Fitzmorris, born March 7, 1917 in Coyville, Kansas, April 2, 1938. They resided for many years in Parsons, Kansas. They had six children before Dennis passed away on October 21, 1985. Son Morton, born in Neodesha, died 12 hours after day he was born on June 13, 1938 and is buried in the Fredonia Cemetery.
Son Larry Joseph Fitzmorris was born November 10, 1939 in Fredonia, Kansas.
Son Norman Edward Fitzmorris was born in Fredonia, Kansas, on March 28, 1941 and passed away September 13, 2000. He is buried in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Wheatland, Oklahoma.
Son Dennis Keith Fitzmorris was born June 5, 1943 in Neodesha, Kansas.
Daughter Lynda Fitzmorris was born August 23, 1945, in Neodesha, Kansas. Son Michael Fitzmorris was born March 4, 1953 in Neodesha, Kansas.

Helen and Royal's son Robert Monroe "Bobby" Patchin was born January 30, 1923 in Neodesha. He passed away January 8, 1972, in Van Nuys, California and is buried in the Neodesha Cemetery. He was married four time.

Daughter Helen Ruth "Ruthie" Patchin was born to Helen & Royal August 4, 1925. Known as Ruth and Ruthie, she married Frank M. Green on October 14, 1944 in Neodesha. They had one son, the light of their lives, on June 21, 1946. He passed away April 4, 1992, and is buried in the Neodesha Cemetery. Frank Greer, born January 28, 1923, in Savonburg, Kansas, died May 26, 2009 at the age of 86 and is buried in the Neodesha Cemetery. He was a welder and helped build many of the grain elevators for MEC of Neodesha.

Daughter Shirley L. Patchin married William Padley in 1961. They had two children: Billy Ray "Corkey" Padley in 1963. Corkey passed away in 2007 at the age of 44 in a vehicle accident. Daughter Autumn Padley was born in 1973 and is the spouse of Jeffrey Fowler.

Helen Monroe Elkins-Patchin then married William Milton Garriott January 31, 1942. They divorced and Bill, born November 27, 1882, in Half Rock, Missouri, died in Neodesha January 22, 1955 at the age of 72. They had no children. Bill had been married previously with children.

Following Helen's divorce from Bill Garriott, she then married Charles Edwin Julian who is buried in Neodesha, and he is buried in the Neodesha Cemetery next to his first wife. Mr. Julian also was then divorced and Helen died in Neodesha on October 9, 1969, in Neodesha.

She was a member of the First Church of God in Neodesha. She gave many people help and encouragement with her many Christian poems.

She is buried in the Neodesha Cemetery where for many years she decorated the memorials of her many relatives, placing small tins of her flowers on their graves. Casket bearers were Larry, Norman & Denny Fitzmorris, Jerry, Kerry, Nick and Rick Elkins.
