Mississippi Governor, U.S. Senator, Civil War CSA Congressman. He served a a United States Senator from Mississippi from 1847 to 1852, resigning to serve as the governor of Mississippi. In 1854, he lost an election to return to the United States Senate by one vote. Moving to San Francisco, California, he lost an 1856 run for the United States Senate there, again, by one vote. During the Civil War, he was the Representative from Tennessee in the Confederate Congress. In early 1865, he was expelled from the CSA Congress for going North on an unauthorized peace mission.
