US Congressman. Born in Rutledge, Tennessee, he was the grandson of US Congressman William Cocke and nephew of US Congressman John Cocke. He graduated from East Tennessee College, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Rutledge and Nashville, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, when elected as a Whig to the Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth Congresses, serving (1845-49). Not a candidate for reelection, he held many local and Tennessee State offices until his death at age 80.
