U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Franklin College Tennessee, in 1854 and taught school in Nashville, (1854-57). He then studied law and during the Civil War, served as regimental quartermaster of the 1st Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, Confederate Army. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced the practice of law in Nashville, Tennessee. He was Attorney General for the district of Davidson and Rutherford Counties, (1870-78) and served as a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1880-82). In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1887. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 69.
