Lt. John Swazey
Dies in Helicopter
Accident At Sea
Lt. John M. Swazey, 30, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert D. Swazey of Bucksport and Winter Park, Florida, was reported missing in a helicopter accident at sea of San Diego, California, on December 12, 1966. Eight Officers and two enlisted men were missing in the same accident. A wife, Lisa, three children, Scott, Melissa, and Charlotte live at 1651 Grove Avenue, Imperial Beach, California.
Lt. Swazey was educated in the public schools of Winchester, Massachusetts. After graduating from Yale University he entered the United States Navy, Officers Training School, Newport R.I. and thence into the Regular Navy.
He served on a minesweeper in the Atlantic and then in a Destroyer Squadron based in Japan. For the last three years he has taught at the Naval School in San Diego. Very recently he was assigned to a newly formed Amphibious squadron in which he was serving at the time of the accident.
Lt. Swazey's family has been intimately connected with the history of Bucksport. He spent many summer vacations here over the years. He was a direct descent of Col. Jonathan Buck and Deacon Henry Darling.
