John W. Hammond was the youngest of the five children born to Walter A. and Carrie E. (Harn)Hammond. Jack moved from Fleming County, Kentucky to Illinois with his parents in 1896, and grew up there (Longpoint Township of Livingston County ?). He moved to Miner County, South Dakota, with his parents in the spring of 1909 (Rock Creek Township). He married Anna M. Schaul, daughter Peter and Mary Blatt Schaul, at Carthage, SD April 9, 1918. Except for the period 1920-1926 when he and Ann farmed south of Canning, Hughes County, South Dakota, he lived in Miner County the rest of his life. From their marriage until January 1920, Jack and Ann lived first with his parents Walter and Carrie Hammond north of Roswell, and then with John Schaul on the farm in the SE 1/4 of Section 31, Green Valley Township. They returned to this farm from Hughes County and lived there until approximately 1950, when they moved to Roswell, South Dakota and resided there the remainder of their lives.
