Note: JOHN BENJAMIN was born December 25, 1751 at Preston, New London County, Conn., the son of John and Margaret (Jameson) Benjamin; He was baptised March 11, 1752 at the First Church of Preston ; died June 24, 1781 at the age of 30. He was "slain by the enemy near Horse Neck" as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He married June 25/29, 1775 Grace Waite of Hopkinton, R.I. . She was the daughter of Thomas and Bridget Waite.
The Pachaug Church has records that carry the deaths of some of the soldiers of the Revolution. His is dated July 1781. In 1778 his name appears on the list of Col. McClellen's Regt. when a petition was presented requesting an increase in pay on account of the enormous raise in the price of provisions. In 1781 he belonged to General Waterbury's Brigade of Connecticut State Militia, Capt. Charles Mill's Co.
John Jameson Benjamin was born Christmas day, 1751 in Preston, New London Co., Connecticut. He married Grace Waite born on the 4th of July, 1756. They had 3 children, Augustus Rufus born Dec. 15, 1775, Joseph b.Oct.17, 1777, and Olive b. Jan. 17, 1780. John was the second child in this family to be named John. The first John was born November 20, 1740 died 9 Mar 1744
In 1776 John joined "The New Haven Alarm", a unit in the Connecticut State militia organized for the costal defense between New York and New Haven, Ct. In 1776 his unit joined up with George Washington's troops and surrounded Boston, driving the British out of the city.
Feb. 26, 1779, British forces raided Greenwich CT, gradually placing most of the town under siege. A 1781 report from the Selectmen to the General Assembly states that the town was overrun, and a 1782 communication from Greenwich's tax collector reported that four-fifths of the town was in enemy hands; he had not been able to collect taxes. According to a family Bible in possession of one of his grandsons, Franklin Alonzo Benjamin, John was "Slain by the enemy near Horse Neck" on June 24, 1781. Horseneck Landing was an area of land in the western edge of present day Greenwich. It was reported that he was buried in The First Congregational Cemetery, Griswold, CT, but the present day First Congregational Church in Griswold is a newer church and the graves in its cemetery aren't that old. The only other major cemetery in the Griswold area is the Pachaug Cemetery where John's younger brother John, brother David and his wives and other relatives are buried so I believe he may be somewhere in that cemetery
