WILLIAM MARTIN SMITH

Bellevue lost its oldest, native-born resident, William Martin Smith, 73, who died of cancer June 3, in a Seattle hospital. He had been ill for about six months.
Funeral services for Mr. Smith, who spent his entire life truck farming in Bellevue, were held Friday at the Green Funeral Home, Chapel of Flowers.
The Rev. John Ruhlman of the First Baptist Church of Eastgate officiated. Mr Smith, several years ago shared honors with Hugh Martin, another Bellevue Pioneer, in being declared Bellevue's oldest residents. Although Mr. Martin was a year older, he was not born in Bellevue. Mr Martin in now in New York.
Mr. Martin's father, pioneer Bellevue physician, Dr. C.M. Martin, delivered Mr. Smith whose parents lived in a home across the street from the present Bellevue Congregational Church on NE 8th. His parents gave him the middle name of Martin after the doctor.
Mr. Smith received his early schooling here in the old elementary school which was once housed in the VFW building on Main Street.
As a young boy, Mr. Smith planted the maple trees that lined Main Street near the old City Hall. After his marriage Mr. Smith resided for many years with his wife, and three children, at their home located on the corner of NE 4th and 100th Ave. NE. They later moved to their 30-acre farm at 2718 Lake Washington Blvd. SE.
Smith's wife, Audrey, died in 1953. She was known to many early day residents as she once operated a nursing home at the NE residence where many of Bellevue's babies were born before the community had any hospital facilities. She later was active in working toward the establishment of the Overlake Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War I. During World War II he worked at the Lake Washington Shipyards. For a time he also worked on the old ferry which years ago docked at the foot of Main Street.
Survivors include two sons, Walter and Deane Smith, both of Bellevue; and a daughter, Mrs. Jack Cotter, of Seattle. Ten grandchildren also survive.
