The son of Jacob & Frances Goshert, he may have been born as late as 1849. In 1860, he was a miller living in Greene Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and by 1865 stood 5' 6" tall with brown hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg, Franklin County, March 1, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 17 as a private with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. K, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.

He married Susan Reitzel February 24, 1870, in Chicago, Illinois, and fathered Charles H. (b. 01/01/70), Anna Olivia (b. 10/11/72 - married Charles F. Byerly), Laura F. (b. @1874 - married Ralph Elmer Millard), Norman J. (b. 08/09/77), Albert R. "Bert" (b. 06/??/82), Edward Cardeen (b. 11/06/86), and Harold Lewis (b. 10/30/95).
