American children's author. Elizabeth George Speare was known for writing historical fiction for children and won many awards, including two Newbery medals. She was born in Massachusetts where she had an "exceptionally happy" childhood, hiking and picnicking in the nearby woods with her extended family.
She married and had two children. She wrote "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" in 1958 for which she received her first Newbery medal. In 1961, she received her second Newbery medal for "The Bronze Bow". She died in Tucson, Arizona in 1994.
