Samuel Wayne Bailey, know as Wayne to family & friends but professionally he went by Sam. I proudly called him Uncle Wayne. He was born January 2. 1925, in Lewis County, WV. He was the ninth child, third son of Samuel Henry Bailey and Amy Bessie Lovett Bailey. He was raised on the family's dairy farm on Simpsons Run, Lewis County, WV.
He graduated from Weston High School where he was active in Future Farmers of America. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was stationed at Prestwick, Scotland. There he met Mary (Mae) Cuthbert and they were married on April 23, 1947 in Annbank, Ayrshire, Scotland. Their son Dennis was born there in 1948.
They returned to the U.S. and Uncle Wayne was honorably discharged from the service. He got a civilian job at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, where my father worked. Housing was hard to find after the war so they moved in with us. Even as a small child I enjoyed having them live with us. Uncle Wayne was the handsomest man I had seen. I loved listening to Aunt Mae talk and Dennis was the brother I always wanted. They were with us for about 2 years and then they found a house and moved. We always stayed close and spent holidays together.
He remained active in the military by participating in the Air Force Reserves where he achieved the rank of Colonel.
He was very interested in family genealogy and did extensive work on our family. He wrote the book "Genealogy of a Bailey Family", which is the foundation of my genealogy work. He did all his research without computers.
He passed away on March 3, 1984 in Enon, Ohio while helping his son-in-law restore a building for a new business. He was buried with full military honors at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Beavercreek, OH
Uncle Wayne was only 59 years old when he died. I know he knew I loved him but I couldn't remember when I had last said it to him. I vowed then that I would tell people how I felt when I saw them because, "sometimes tomorrow never comes".
