Obituary from Deseret News (Salt Lake City, UT) Tuesday, May 16, 2000:
Eli Karl Clayson, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on May 14, 2000 at his home in Provo. He was 89 years old.

Eli was born on September 28, 1910, to Ann Elizabeth and Eli J. Clayson in American Fork, Utah. He graduated from American Fork High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in business administration. He served a mission in the German-Austrian Mission from 1931-34. On June 10, 1939, he married Beulah Memmott in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He was employed by the J.C. Penney Company for 19 years in Provo and Magna, Utah, and then Cody and Sheridan, Wyoming. When he resigned from the Penney Company he moved his family to Orem, Utah, where he owned and operated his own grocery store for eleven years. Thereafter he sold real estate until his retirement.

His community service included participation in the Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Knife and Fork Club and the BYU Alumni Board. He served on the Alpine School Board for ten years and for a portion of that time was the president of the board. He was the Lieutenant Governor for the Utah-Idaho Kiwanis Club in the early 70's.

Second only to his family, his greatest love has been many years of dedicated service to the LDS Church. In his early life he served as a teacher and officer in every church auxiliary. While living in Sheridan, Wyoming, he was a counselor in the Branch Presidency for eleven years. After moving to Orem he was called to serve as a counselor in the Orem Stake Presidency and later as Stake President in the Orem North Stake. He served in these positions for 17 years.

In 1974 he was called with Beulah to preside over the Germany Frankfurt Mission. Following his three year mission he served as a counselor in the BYU Third Stake Presidency until he was called as Regional Representative to the Germany-Switzerland Area. For the past twenty-two years he has been a sealer in the Provo Temple and for the last four years he has been a language trainer working with the German speaking missionaries at the Missionary Training Center.

His interests included a passion for gardening. He derived a great deal of pleasure from beautifying his neighborhood wherever he lived. He loved to travel and visited 45 different countries with his wife and family. He authored his own personal history and compiled two volumes of personal speeches, thoughts, and poems.

Eli is survived by Beulah, his loving wife of sixty-one years; a sister, Ann Clayson Larsen; four children: Karl Reno (Jane), Fred Eli (Marti), Karen Clayson Batt (Doyle), and Stephen Eugene (Sandra); and 14 grandchildren: Janie, Hannah, Michael, Alison, Stephen Eli, Kimberly, Scott, Melinda, Brad, David Batt, Karen, Peter, Heather and Joseph. One grandchild, David Karl Clayson, preceded Grandpa in death.

Funeral services will be held in the Edgemont Eleventh Ward Chapel, 3050 Mojave Lane, in Provo on Thursday, May 18, 2000, starting at 11 a.m.
