Michael Anthony Colella was born into an Italian-American family of ten children, in the largely Italian city of Rome, New York. He became a doctor and served in WWII. After his retirement, he and his wife, Elizabeth Colella, lived in Sarasota, Florida and in Alexandria, Virginia, where he died of Alzheimer's disease in 1996.
