From the January 4, 1961 issue of the Illinoian Star newspaper, Beardstown, Illinois: George J. Wittlinger, 78, retired farmer of Ashland, died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at Springfield Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Friday. His death was just a week after that of his wife Edna. The body was removed to the Gainer Funeral Home in Ashland where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday. The Rev. William Jones will be assisted by the Rev. Judson Sauer. Burial will be in Pleasant Plains Cemetery. Wittlinger was born northeast of Ashland April 18, 1882, son of Michael and Anne Heibit (sic) Wittlinger. He was married to Edna Crum on June 4, 1903. She died last Tuesday. One son and four sisters preceded him in death. He was the last member of his family. He was a member of the Ashland Methodist Church, Ansar Shrine Consistory of Springfield and the Ashland Masonic Lodge.
