He retired from acting shortly thereafter. He passed away in Los Angeles, California, on February 16, 1971, at the age of 79. He was cremated and his ashes are stored in vaultage at the Chapel of the Pines in Los Angeles, California. He was married to Gladys Marie Johnson Roach (1890-), with whom he had one child, a son named Avery Roach born in 1908.
