ABINGDON - Geraldine M. "Jet" Bauer, 82, of 203 W. Latimer St. died at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at the Care Center of Abingdon. Born April 27, 1921, in Abingdon to Larry and Zoe Stegall Billings, she married Pat Bauer on Dec. 17, 1949, in Abingdon. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, William (and Carolyn) of Glasford and Gerald (and Bienvenida) of Luqillo, Puerto Rico; one sister, Kathleen Emery of Galesburg; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister. A World War II Women's Army Corps veteran, she enlisted in September 1943 and served overseas in Europe and in the Battle of Northern France. She received a Bronze Star and several other medals. She was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381 in Abingdon and was a past member of the Legion Auxiliary. She had worked at the Abingdon Telephone Office, the Galesburg Airport, Abingdon Pottery and also wrote for the Abingdon News and the Galesburg Register-Mail for many years. She also sold the World Book Encyclopedia for a number of years and Avon products for 29 years. She was a member of the first auxiliary police group established by the Abingdon Police Department. A former member of the Galesburg Prairie China Painters, she was a china painter. She was a former Cub Scout leader. She also was active in starting the Abingdon Community Festival Association, serving as its chairman of arts and crafts. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon, where she was a past youth leader. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at her church. The Rev. Joseph Presley will officiate. Friends may call the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel, where recitation of the Rosary will be at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by her American Legion Post.
