Rev. Akker was born in 1925 to Will and Anna Akker in Morrison, Illinois. After graduating from Morrison High School, he served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, Levi was united marriage to Tena Drolema in Morrison. He then pursued a teaching degree from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, returning to Fulton, Illinois, where he taught elementary school and coached basketball. After teaching in a mission school at Annville, Kentucky, he enrolled in Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, where he later received his Masters of Divinity degree.
Levi and Tena lived life to the fullest with their two adopted children. They did many activities together, such as traveling, camping, and fishing. Following Tena's death in 1990, Levi later married Myna VanBogelen.
Rev. Akker was a longtime pastor with the Reformed Church in America, serving congregations in Aplington, Iowa, Eagan, Minn., Byron Center, Mich., Oostburg, Wis., Rockford, Mich., Woodstock, Minn., and Venice and Bradenton, Fla., until his retirement in 1994.
Survivors include his loving wife Myna at The Alverno, Clinton; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Bob Michmerhuizen of Holland, Mich.; son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Brian and Mary Akker of Bettendorf, Iowa; three grandchildren, Rachael Hulst and Kyle and Tyler Akker; his sister, Eunice Still, and his brother, Louis Akker, both of Morrison, Illinois; four stepchildren and their families; and nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
