During World War I, Joe enlisted in the United States Army on September 17, 1917. He attained the rank of private first class and served in France as a medic in the Medical Corps. He was discharged at Camp Upton, in Yaphank New York on June 10, 1919.
After completing his service, Joe entered the banking industry and in 1921 he joined the American Foreign Insurance Association as its chief accountant at its Shanghai, China office. Two years later, he was transferred to the cooperate headquarters in New York City.
Joe married Frances Marie (King) O'Brien (~1902-1937) at St Benedict's Roman Catholic Church in Bronx, New York on April 25, 1925. Joseph and Frances had four children: Eileen Frances (O'Brien) Mills (1927 - ?); Joan Marie (O'Brien) Dawson (1928-1975); Robert O'Brien (1931-2009); and Richard Francis O'Brien.
After Frances' death, Joe married June Elizabeth Boerner (1915-2001) on August 29, 1942 in the St Patrick's Cathedral Rectory, in New York City, New York. Joe and June had two children: Kevin Michael O'Brien and Karen Ann O'Brien.
In 1949, Joe become the chief accountant and controller of the American Foreign Insurance Association and two years later he was made director of the associations worldwide personnel affairs. Then, after 32 years with the company, Joe was elected secretary.
In his spare time, he was also a member of the A.F.I.A. Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus.
Joe passed away on May 4, 1960 at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City, New York. He was interred at St Raymond's Cemetery on May 7, 1960.
Joe was survived by his second wife, June; all of his children; and several grandchildren.
