Obituary:
Evelyn Frances Speir Anderson, 77, of Kinsman Road, Jamestown, was called to God’s Kingdom at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011. Born May 18, 1934, in Kinsman, Ohio, to Samuel Parker Speir and Mildred Sevon Speir, Evelyn married John Waldemar Anderson on June 16, 1953, at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne, Ind. Mr. Anderson survives. A graduate of Kinsman High School, Evelyn was a member of the National Honor Society and valedictorian of the Class of 1952. Winning an Ohio Scholarship award in 1952, she attended Kent State University, where she majored in education. Evelyn attended St. Margaret Catholic Church and was a founding member and first president of St. Margaret’s Women’s Guild. For 15 years she was the coordinator of St. Margaret’s Religious Education program. She also served on St. Michael’s Religious Education board and was a member of the parish council. In 2006, Evelyn received Papal Honors, being named a Lady of Pope St. Sylvester, in recognition of her tireless work for St. Margaret’s and the catechesis of the church’s youth. For 12 years Evelyn was inspector of elections for Greene Township. She was a charter member of the Jamestown Area Historical Society and served as president and secretary. She also belonged to Greenville, Mercer County and Crawford County historical societies, and Mercer County and Crawford County Genealogical societies. She was a member of the Jamestown Study Class and a neighborhood card club, and served as corresponding secretary of the Kinsman High School Alumni Association. She was also formerly a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5424 Ladies’ Auxiliary. Additionally, she previously served as a judge at Jamestown Elementary School’s Discovery Fair. An avid genealogist and dedicated historian, Evelyn had a passion for lifelong learning and a love of music. She enjoyed watching Cleveland Indian baseball and the Utah Jazz. Most importantly, she was a devoted wife and mother of 12. In addition to her husband of 58 years, Evelyn is survived by six sons, Michael N. Anderson and his wife, Julie, of Jamestown, Mark E. Anderson and his wife, Toni-Renee, of Ebensburg, Dale M. Anderson and his wife, Susan, of Jamestown, Douglas Eric Anderson and his companion, Michael Mooney, of Ashtabula, Ohio, Robert (Bob) P. Anderson of Jamestown and Alan J. Anderson of Mercer; and six daughters, Margaret A. Patton and her husband, Tom, of Washington, Pa., Mary Lee Anderson of Powhatan, Va., Karen L. Kimrey of Raleigh, N.C., Kaye T. Lenkner and her husband, Phil, of Greenville, Rose M. Leonhard and her husband, Greg, of Kinsman, and Joyce C. Anderson Randall, of Jamestown. She is also survived by a sister, Norma Speir Orechoneg, of Austintown, Ohio; 29 grandchildren, Troy and Shane Litwiler, Jason, Sally, Stacey and Joseph Myers, Seth Van Arsdale, Lindsey and Ashley Anderson, Stephenie Anderson, Christopher and Cody Kimrey, Lauren Anderson Stark, Ian Anderson, Kayla, Nekody and Melia Lenkner, Elizabeth Weese Anderson Hayes, Evan Anderson, Chrissy and Jessica Sommers, Katrina, Lisa and Erika Leonhard, Zoe, Orion and Kieran Anderson, and Caden and Sullivan Randall; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Charlotte and Robert Hayes. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by a grandson, Davin Kincaid Anderson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jamestown Area Historical Society, PO Box 243, Jamestown, Pa. 16134. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Randall Funeral Home, 416 Liberty St., Jamestown. A prayer vigil will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church, 701 Denver St., Jamestown, with Father Christopher Barnes as celebrant. Interment and committal service will be in Park Lawn Cemetery, Jamestown.
